Travelling on the Yangtze River, China's longest river, reveals dramatic scenery, rushing waters and highlights of respective Chinese lifestyles. Three great gorges in Sichuan and Hubei provinces are regarded as one of the great scenic attractions of China. Since June 2003 the waters of the Yangtze River behind the dam have gradually risen as the water level was raised to 135 metres above sea level. In 2009 the water level is due to be raised to a final level of 175 metres, eventually submerging whole towns and flooding the narrow river gorges of the Yangtze¡¯s tributaries, creating a lake behind the dam and smoothing out the shoals and rapids on the river. Water levels have visibly risen in the river, particularly nearer the dam and in some of the tributaries, but the overall effect has not lessened the natural beauty and grandeur of the Three Gorges themselves, as the cliffs still tower over the river. Where do cruise boats go? Most boats now operate between Yichang, just downstream of the Three Gorges Dam, and Chongqing, the latter being the upper limit of navigation for the cruise boats. Some others start at Wuhan. There is also the option to travel take a cruise all the way down the river to near its mouth near Shanghai. Although the scenery is less spectacular than between Yichang and Chongqing, some extensive shore excursions are often included, such as to Huangshan. How do cruise boats differ? There are many cruise boats on the river, but in this relatively remote area of China standards do vary widely, and reliable boat operators who are used to dealing with western travellers are not as widespread as might be thought. Furthermore, many cheap package Tours use second-rate boats to save money, while others are more suited to the Chinese Toursism market, which is very different, and where you may find that the levels of service, maintenance and availability of spoken English will fall far short of what you expect. To avoid disappointment we therefore recommend the following boats/cruise lines as generally reliable and geared more towards western visitors: Recommended Cruisers Regal China Cruises (5 star) -Chongqing-Wuhan and vice versa Yangtze Angel Series (5 star) ¨C Chongqing-Yichang and vice versa Victoria Series (4 star) ¨C Chongqing-Yichang and vice versa All the above boats offer air-conditioned twin-berth cabins with separate bathroom with shower, TV, IDD phone, and a range of restaurants, bars, health/sauna/gym facilities, and regular lectures and activities. A number of luxury suites are also available. Please remember that these are river boats, not ocean liners, so are relatively small scale, often with a maximum capacity between 100 to 200 passengers. On the other hand, all cabins are outward facing, with a central corridor.
