He Gui Lou

Heguilou | The Majestic Noah’s Ark on Swampland

Heguilou

“The Noble Fortress on the Marsh”

21.5 mHeight (5 Stories)
1732Year Built
3,000+Pine Logs Foundation

Located in Pushan Village, Meilin Town, Heguilou is a record-breaking structure. Standing at 21.5 meters, it is the tallest square Tulou in existence. However, its most astonishing feat isn’t its height, but its location—it was built entirely on unstable swampland.

The “Land Ark” Engineering:

To prevent the building from sinking, Hakka ancestors used a massive network of over 3,000 pine logs as a raft-like foundation. If you jump in the center of the courtyard, you can actually feel the ground vibrate slightly, earning it the nickname “the dancing building.”

The Mystery of Yin and Yang Wells

Inside the courtyard lie two wells only 18 meters apart, yet they exhibit completely different characteristics:

The Yang Well:

Crystal clear water, sweet and safe for drinking, representing the purity of life.

The Yin Well:

Always murky and yellowish, unsuitable for consumption, a natural enigma of the swamp below.
