Located in Gaobei Village, Chengqilou is the most massive and celebrated of all Hakka earthen buildings. Built in 1708 during the Qing Dynasty, this architectural giant earned its title as the “King of Tulou” for its unparalleled scale, a crown jewel in the Fujian Tulou highlights.
A City Within a Building
The layout of Chengqilou is a marvel of ancient sociology and defense. It consists of four concentric circular rings:
- Outer Ring: 4 stories high, used for living and storage.
- Second Ring: 2 stories high, historically used as guest rooms.
- Third Ring: 1 story high, used for community activities.
- The Core: An ancestral hall located at the very center.
In its peak, this “vertical village” housed over 80 families. It remains a key highlight of the Fujian Day Tours itinerary.
