Located in Hekeng Village, Shuyang Town, the Hekeng Tulou Cluster is perhaps the most impressive and extensive collection of Hakka fortresses in Fujian. Spread across a lush valley, these 27 buildings represent the perfect evolution of Tulou design from the Ming to the Qing dynasties.
Seven of the round buildings in the cluster are famously arranged in a pattern resembling the Big Dipper constellation. This celestial alignment was intentional, believed to bring eternal prosperity to the clans. It is a highlight of any Fujian Heritage Tour.
Architectural Diversity
Unlike other clusters that feature only one or two primary buildings, Hekeng is a living museum. Within this valley, you can witness the contrast between square fortresses and the legendary circular rings, much like those found in the Nanjing Tulou cluster.
- Square Fortresses: The traditional defense layout.
- Circular Rings: Optimized for acoustics and solar light.
Hekeng remains remarkably authentic and less commercialized than its neighbors. It was this raw, historic beauty that caught the eye of Hollywood scouts, leading it to become a primary filming location for Disney’s “Mulan” (2020).
