Located in Gaopo, Yongding, Yijinglou is an architectural titan that redefines the concept of a “house.” Measuring 136 meters in width and 76 meters in depth, it is more of an earth building cluster than a single structure, designed to house an entire clan’s legacy.
Construction began in the 11th year of Emperor Jiaqing’s reign (Qing Dynasty). It took three generations of the Su family to complete this masterpiece. This endurance reflects the unwavering Hakka spirit of perseverance and ancestral devotion, making it a cornerstone of Fujian Tulou highlights.
A Palace-Style Layout
Yijinglou features a unique configuration: three primary 5-story quadrangular houses aligned in the center, flanked by two 4-story wings. This “layered” design creates a grand, palace-like atmosphere, with a maze of 400 rooms connected by corridors that allowed residents to traverse the entire complex without ever touching the rain.
Travel Tip: Because of its immense size and historical significance, Yijinglou is a must-visit for students of architecture and those seeking the “King of Space” among Fujian travel destinations.
