Yongkanglou | The Art & Elegance of Hakka Screens

Yongkanglou

A Masterpiece of White Plaster & Carved Wood

Built in 1938 and nestled in Xia Village (perfectly positioned between Chuxi and Xiayang Town), Yongkanglou is an architectural standout. Unlike its earthen-colored neighbors, its striking white-plastered external walls and elegant interior make it one of the most aesthetically refined buildings in the Fujian region.

A Gallery of Traditional Art

Painted Beams & Pillars

The interior is a festival of color and craftsmanship. Every beam is meticulously painted, and every pillar is hand-carved, showcasing the wealth and artistic ambition of the original owners during the early 20th century.

40 Folding Screens

The building’s crown jewel: 40 traditional wooden folding screens. Each screen is adorned with intricate decorations, calligraphy, and symbolic motifs, serving as both functional partitions and high-end gallery pieces.

The screens are famous for their “Zhong-tang” style, often featuring scenes from classic literature and nature, reflecting the Hakka people’s deep respect for education and traditional values. For history buffs and art lovers, Yongkanglou offers a rare look at the fusion of residential defense and high-society art.
