Yuchanglou | The Leaning Marvel of Fujian Tulou

Yuchanglou

EST. 1308 The “East-to-West” Leaning Building

15°
A Defiance of Gravity: Built during the Yuan Dynasty, Yuchanglou is most famous for its tilted pillars. Despite the extreme slant, the building has stood for over 700 years through earthquakes and storms without collapsing.

Located in Xiaban Village, Yuchanglou is one of the oldest and largest round Tulou in Nanjing County. It is a cornerstone of the Fujian Tulou Highlights, featuring a unique internal layout originally divided into five vertical sections for different clans.

Architectural Highlights

The “Drunken” Pillars

While the first floor is vertical, the upper floors tilt in opposite directions, creating a mesmerizing visual zig-zag that defies traditional engineering.

Five-Element Layout

Reflecting ancient philosophy, the building is divided into five segments, each with its own staircase for different families.

Ancient Foundation

Constructed in 1308, it predates many of the more “perfect” structures found on our Fujian In-depth Tours.

Community Wells

A rare luxury: each kitchen on the ground floor has its own private well for daily convenience.
