The character "Fu" in "Fujian" means "Good Fortune" in Chinese, and this province is surely worthy of the name. Not only is the land here endowed with a subtropical climate, that gives it temperate winters and comfortable summers, but it is also dominated by a natural and often rugged beauty, and is a focal point for many interesting periods of China's history. The province currently has a population of around 33 million, with an area of 120,000 square kilometers, and a province wide local dialect, Minnan hua that is a close cousin of the Taiwanese local language.
History
Fujian, known in English as Fukien of Hokkien, has been part of the Chinese empire since the Qin dynasty (221-207 BC). In 1087, with the establishment of Fujian City's Office for Oceangoing Ships in the costal city of Quanzhou, overseas communications and foreign trade became prosperous. Silk, textiles, precious stones, porcelain and other Chinese products traveled from here along the maritime Silk to all over the world. When Marco Polo visited the area in late 13th century, he called Quanzhou “ one of the two ports in the world with the biggest flow of merchangdise.” In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Xiamen, with its excellent harbor and convenient maritime transportation gradually took the place of Quanzhou port. Huge number and became the stepping stone for Chinese people heading to Taiwan and South East Asia. Now most Taiwanese and many Chinese in South East Asia still consider Fujian to be their ancestral home.
Geography
Fujian Province is situated on southeast China coast at 115°50'-120°43''E and 23°30'-28°22'N, stretching 540 Kilometers from east to west and 550 Kilometers from north to south with a land area of 123,800 square kilometers, of which 75% are mountains, 15% are hill and 10% are plains. Fujian has traditionally been reputed as a province with "eighty per cent of mountains, ten per cent of waters and ten per cent of farmland"· The province is bounded by Zhejiang Province on the north, Guangdong Province on the south and Jiangxi Province on the west. Facing Taiwan on the east across the Taiwan Straits, Fujian is a mere 72 nautical miles away from Taiwan at the shortest distance.
Climate
Located in the subtropical zone, Fujian enjoys a subtropical oceanic monsoon climate of warm weather and plenty of rainfall. With an annul mean temperature ranging between 17℃ and 21℃ and an average annual rainfall between 1,400 to 2,000 mm, the province is free from frost for 240 to 330 days per annum.

Flights
Xiamen and Fuzhou are the main transportation hub in the region. There are regular flights to Xiamen and Fuzhou from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, HK, Macau and all major cities in China. There are 4 daily flights between Xiamen and Hong Kong and takes only an hour.
