Ashab Mosque (Qingjing Mosque) is the oldest Mosque in China. Built in 1009 AD, the 2500 sq metre Ashab Mosque is a duplicate of a mosque in Damascus and is apparently rated as one of the top ten Muslim holy sites of the world. The mosque was renovated in 1310 by an Iranian, Ihamed B. Muhammed Gudeish. The large dome that once stood above the Fengtian Altar collapsed in an earthquake in 1607 and now only the entrance and outer walls remain. The 600 sq metre worship hall was covered by a large dome at one time but sadly, that has collapsed. This has left the worship hall as an open courtyard with a grass floor with some remaining pillars. The front of the mosque is on one of Quanzhou's busiest streets and a new mosque used by Quanzhou's Muslim community is at the rear.
